Wanted: Dead or Alive

Nearly 20% of MonsterCommerce (MC) employees smoke or chew tobacco regularly. Many of them, based on conversations we have had with them, would like to quit. Some would not. This initiative is aimed to leverage the financial and social support a unique company like MC can offer those who want to quit. This is not intended to get those to quit who do not wish to.

Many quit attempts fail because the quitter feels like an outsider in their everyday life. Sadly, it is the most reliable part of their life they are removing. They are told over and over it is the best thing they can do for them in the hopes of getting them to quit. Often, however, this convincing argument goes mute post quit-day, immersed in colleagues, friends, and significant others that are used to their smoking habits and personality.

Therefore, Wanted: Dead or Alive attempts to make it as interesting for the bystander watching a quit attempt as the quitter him/herself. An entire company watches two-dozen smokers/chewers attempt to quit their deadly vice. The onlookers are rewarded with cash and prizes to catch quitters cheating and quitters are rewarded for every major step they take towards being tobacco free for life.

World's Fastest Laptop Crashes - Article

Nick Matina originally hired me and trained me to work here at MonsterCommerce. A coworker sent me an article about him that was published in July of 2004.

Coming home from the drag strip one night, where he uses a laptop to micro-adjust the bike's electronic fuel-injection system, Matina felt his backpack give way at 80 mph and watched helplessly as his Dell Inspiron 8200Dell Home Laptop Specials careened behind him down the California freeway. Matina saved himself from a near crash caused by the computer's power supply, which got caught up in his rear wheel. But he figured there wouldn't be much left of the computer, so he gathered his other belongings and headed safely for home.

Much to his surprise, Matina received an e-mail several days later from an individual who found the battered machine...

He is an interesting personality and probably a genius. Please read the full story on CNET News.com.

Update (2008/12/15)

For several years, Nick has been the driving force behind the company ChatStat, a company that Network Solutions has just partnered with.
